Poland (GG) 1944 Issue for the Culture Fund of the General Government 5 stamps, mint, no. 120–124

A set of five postage stamps issued in 1944 in the General Government (GG) is part of the Culture Fund issue. Each stamp features a portrait of a prominent historical figure associated with German and European culture, art, or history. The stamps are surcharge stamps – their denominations include two values (e.g., “12 + 18 GR”), the second part of which was allocated to the fund.

Figures on the stamps:

  • Conrad Celtis (1459–1508) – German humanist and poet (green, 12+18 gr)
  • Andreas Schlüter (1664–1714) – Baroque sculptor and architect (red, 24+26 gr)
  • Georg Gottlieb Pusch (1791–1846) – German-Polish geologist and paleontologist (brown, 1+1 złoty)
  • Hans Boner - (1462-1523) – Krakow merchant and royal banker (purple, 30+30 gr)
  • August der Starke (1670–1733) – Elector of Saxony and King of Poland (blue, 50+50 gr)

These stamps are valued by collectors for their historical and artistic value, as well as for their political and propaganda context during the occupation.
