Non-cancelled stamp issue "Christmas - “10 PLN” Puck School"
Catalogue number: 5545
Issue date: 28-10-2026
On 28 October 2026 Polish Post issued the “Christmas” philatelic issue consisting of three postage stamps that combine the festive atmosphere of Christmas with one of the most important elements of the cultural heritage of Pomerania – Kashubian embroidery.
In this year's Christmas issue, traditional Christmas baubles became a space for presenting patterns originating from three schools of Kashubian embroidery. Each stamp features a different variation of this unique folk art, showcasing the richness of ornaments, colours and symbolism associated with Kashubian culture.
Although Kashubian embroidery is primarily associated with colourful floral motifs, it is not uniform. Over time, eight regional schools developed, each distinguished by its own composition, ornamentation and colour palette. The issue presents three of them: the Wejherowo School, the Żukowo School and the Puck School.
This year's issue was prepared in cooperation with the Kashubian-Pomeranian Association, the custodian of the Kashubian embroidery heritage and publisher of embroidery pattern collections. The issue also commemorates the 70th anniversary of the Kashubian-Pomeranian Association, celebrated on 2 December 2026.
🎄📮 “ECONOMY S” Stamp – Wejherowo School
The first stamp depicts a Christmas bauble decorated with motifs characteristic of the Wejherowo School. The development of this style is associated with Franciszka Majkowska, who in the 1950s created her own interpretation of Kashubian embroidery. The Wejherowo School is distinguished by elaborate floral compositions, rich ornamentation, vivid colours, extensive use of red and yellow tones. The bauble displays stylized flowers, leaves and plant motifs characteristic of this embroidery style. Red, green, blue and yellow create a rich decorative composition. The Wejherowo School is regarded as the most colourful tradition among all varieties of Kashubian embroidery.
🩵📮 “PRIORITY S” Stamp – Żukowo School
The second stamp presents a pattern originating from the Żukowo School, one of the most recognizable varieties of Kashubian embroidery. Its origins are connected with monastic traditions and the work of Maksymilian Lewandowski and sisters Jadwiga and Zofia Ptach. The Żukowo School uses the seven traditional colours of Kashubia three shades of blue, yellow, green, red, black. The bauble features a characteristic floral composition surrounded by plant ornaments. Various shades of blue dominate, complemented by yellow and green details. The most recognizable motif of this school is the shaded rose, but tulips, rosettes, hearts, clovers and pomegranate fruits are also commonly used.
🎀📮 “10 PLN” Stamp – Puck School
The third stamp presents motifs from the Puck School, whose development is closely associated with Bronisława Wrycza-Plińska. The Puck School emerged in the late 1930s and is distinguished by motifs inspired by the Baltic coastal landscape. Alongside traditional floral ornaments, the embroidery includes sea waves, fishing nets, maritime motifs, sea holly. The bauble presented on the stamp reflects this coastal inspiration and is dominated by various shades of blue. Other colours are muted and subdued, distinguishing the Puck School from other Kashubian embroidery traditions.
Each stamp features a Christmas bauble suspended from a coloured ribbon. Pine branches, pine cones and snowflake motifs decorate the lower part of the composition, evoking the atmosphere of Christmas.
The combination of traditional Christmas ornaments with Kashubian embroidery highlights the vitality of local traditions and their continued presence in contemporary culture.
The issue demonstrates that Kashubian embroidery is not merely a relic of the past. Its motifs continue to inspire artists, designers and craftsmen and remain present in modern design.
