FDC issue "1st Polish Armoured Division - Odyssey of Liberty"
Catalogue number: 2352
Issue date: 28-02-2025
The stamp shows soldiers of the 1st Armored Division on a tank, greeted after liberation by residents of the Belgian border areas. The FDC envelope presents a photo of Soldiers of the 1st Armored Division on the streets of liberated Lotenhulle (Belgium) in September 1944.
The postmark design features a graphic depicting Gen. Stanislaw Maczek. The 1st Armored Division under the command of General Stanislaw Maczek took part in the fighting in western Europe after the Allied landings in Normandy in 1944.
After successful operations in northern France, the division moved on to Belgium, where it fought a number of important battles. One of the most significant moments was the liberation of Lotenhulle. The stamp commemorates not only the military actions themselves, but also symbolizes the fighting spirit, sacrifice and cooperation between Poles and allies in the pursuit of freedom. Often on such symbols there is also a reference to the brotherhood of arms and the memory of fallen soldiers.
The stamp is thus a tribute to the 1st Armored Division, which played a key role in the liberation of Belgium and contributed to ending the German occupation of the region.
