This beautiful stamp shows the Tumskie Hill in Plock from a bird's eye view - one of the oldest and most important historical sites in Poland.
In the foreground is the majestic Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which dates back to the 11th century. It is here that the first rulers of Poland from the Piast dynasty - Władysław Herman and Bolesław Krzywousty - are buried.
The FDC envelope graphic depicts the herma of St. Sigismund - a reliquary containing a fragment of the skull of the saint, patron saint of the cathedral and the city of Plock, donated to Plock Cathedral by King Casimir the Great in 1370. The herma is crowned with an authentic Piast diadem (the so-called Plock diadem) from the late 13th century. It is decorated with numerous sapphires, rubies and pearls.
In the postmark graphic - Maiestas Domini (Christ in majesty), a fragment of one of the quarters of the Plock Doors. The door was created in the middle of the 12th century in Magdeburg for the newly erected Plock Cathedral, consecrated in 1144.
Tumskie Hill, picturesquely located on the banks of the Vistula River, has for centuries been the spiritual and cultural center of Mazovia. Surrounded by greenery and historic buildings, it attracts both pilgrims and tourists from all over the country. The Tumskie Hill in Plock has been honored with the title of Monument of History. The status of a monument of history is awarded to immovable monuments of special historical, scientific and artistic value, established in the popular consciousness and of great importance to the cultural heritage of Poland. Located on the Tumskie Hill, the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (which is the largest necropolis of the Piasts) is the most important church of the Diocese of Plock, which is celebrating its 950th anniversary in 2025.
