Non-cancelled sheet issue "Cultivated plants"
Catalogue number: 5458
Issue date: 17-06-2025
A unique postage stamp issued by the Polish Post, depicting an ear of triticale - a cereal that is a cross between wheat and rye, of the Grenado variety.
The proposer of the theme and substantive consultant of the issue was the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, which selected cereals for the first stamp of the series - and as the breeding variety of the representative of this genus - triticale of the Grenado variety.
The goal of breeding triticale was to create a plant with good grain quality and fertility, similar to wheat, while at the same time with disease resistance and tolerance to adverse environmental conditions, like rye. Modern methods used in triticale breeding in Poland have resulted in major varietal advances. Due to such great achievements and the largest cultivated area, triticale - especially winter triticale - is considered a Polish specialty in the world. One of the most important varieties of triticale from Polish breeding is - shown on the stamp - GRENADO - one of the first short-season varieties, it combines the features of excellent fertility, resistance to hatching and diseases caused by fungi, and very good winter hardiness. Equally important features are its tolerance to drought and weaker soil conditions.
The Cultivated Plants series celebrates the richness of Polish agriculture and its importance to the economy.🌾
