On September 1, at around 4:45 a.m., German police and SS troops attacked the post office building at Heveliuspltz in Gdańsk with artillery and machine guns, hoping to take it quickly by surprise. In 1939, anticipating the possibility of a German coup in Gdańsk, the Polish authorities reinforced the post office building's security. At the time of the attack, there were 55 staff members in the post office, as well as one railway worker and two women: the caretaker's wife and a teenager named Erwina Barzychowska. The post office staff, commanded by Second Lieutenant K. Guderski “Konrad,” armed with three light machine guns, rifles, and grenades, resisted for 14 hours.
The defense of the Polish Post Office in Gdańsk was one of the first acts of Polish resistance against Nazi Germany's aggression.
