Cancelled block issue "500th anniversary of the Prussian homage"
Catalogue number: 271
Issue date: 10-04-2025
The stamp and the FDC envelope FDC depict a fragment of Jan Matejko's painting “The Prussian Homage”.
The painting shows the moment when the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, Albrecht Hohenzollern, paid homage to King Sigismund I the Old on April 10, 1525 in Krakow's Main Square. Albrecht received from the hands of the king a pennant with the coat of arms of Ducal Prussia as a symbol of fiefdom. The sign of dependence on the King and Crown was symbolized by the letter S (Sigismundus) on the chest of the black Prussian eagle and the crown on its neck. This was an event of great political and symbolic significance, ending the existence of the Teutonic State and transforming it into the secular Duchy of Prussia - the first Protestant state in Europe.
The postmark design features an image of Sigismund I the Old.
Jan Matejko's painting “The Prussian Homage” is from the collection of the Wawel Royal Castle.
